This lesson on Word Problems integrates mathematical standards and reading standards into one lesson. The age group it focuses on is 6-7 years, or first grade. Various types of media are weaved into these lessons and the students will be using Smartboard activities as well as other types of media. The main focus will be on word problems and teaching students how to read math and what kinds of vocabulary are imperative to understanding word problems.
Standards:
Common Core English/Language Arts 1st Grade:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.1
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.2
Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.3
Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
-Common Core Mathematics for 1st Grade:
1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve
word problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing, with unknowns in all positions,
e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations
with a symbol for the unknown number to represent
the problem. (Note: See Glossary, Table 1.)
1.OA.2 Solve word problems that call for addition of
three whole numbers whose sum is less than or
equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and
equations with a symbol for the unknown number
to represent the problem.
